How to Clean the Mats in your Vehicle
It doesn't matter whether they are plastic, rubber or carpet mats, you always start by carefully taking the mats out of the vehicle. Try not to spill any of the dirt or debris as you remove the mats so you don't make a bigger mess for yourself inside the vehicle.
Start by vacuuming the mats. This will remove any dirt that can get lodged in the mat during the cleaning process. Use as powerful of a vacuum as you have available. Many mats are made with dense carpet and dirt can be trapped deep inside of it.
If have rubber or plastic mats, you will next take a bucket of warm or hot water and put some common detergent in it. These mats will take anything. Get a nice soft fiber brush and aggressively rub down the mat. This should remove any dirt or spill from the rubber finish. If you have sticky stuff on the mat, get some vegetable oil to start. This will take away most sticky things. If that doesn't work try Goo Gone. If you have paint or other more permanent discoloration you can always use terpentine to see if that will take it off. Sometimes you have to live with the discoloration because the cure will look worse than the problem.
If you have carpet mats, you will need to also get a carpet cleaner. Yes, the same stuff you use in your home. There are many kinds. Some require you to mix them and then apply the mixture to the mats. Others are foamy and all you do is vacuum off the dried residue. Treat your car carpet just like the carpet in your house. They are the same materials. If you have sticky stuff use the same procedure mentioned in #2 above.
The last thing you need to do is properly dry the mats before you put them back into the vehicle. If you put wet mats back into your vehicle, they can mildew and make an awful odor inside. This is especially true in the warmer parts of the country or during the Summer months. Hang your mats to let them dry. Don't forget to turn them over. It is just as important to dry the bottom as it is to dry the top.
If after you clean your mats they are no longer good enough for your ride, check you some replacement mats in our web store, Mats4Less.com.
